Battle Between Oscar and Obama Continues

By BENJAMIN SPILLMAN LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Residents and community leaders upset by Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman’s angry statements about President Barack Obama said they would welcome Obama to the city, even if Goodman won’t.

At a news conference today at City Hall Katherine Duncan, president of the Las Vegas Ward Five Chamber of Commerce, Assemblyman Harvey Munford, D-Las Vegas, and several residents said Goodman overreacted to Obama’s statement Tuesday in New Hampshire warning people not to “blow cash in Vegas when you’re trying to save for college.”

Shortly after Obama’s speech Goodman and many other Nevada politicians immediately criticized Obama, saying he shouldn’t discourage Las Vegas visitation, especially when the Nevada economy is in shambles.

Goodman went so far as to say he wouldn’t welcome Obama during a presidential visit planned around Feb. 18. “We want to offer an open invitation to our president,” Duncan said. “We want to offer our sincere apologies on behalf of our mayor.”

The news conference came the day after a community meeting during which Goodman stormed out following a racially charged exchange with a resident. Witnesses said the exchange was over school integration and Goodman’s role in the black community. At the meeting there were also fliers denouncing Goodman’s Obama comments and urging residents to express their discontent at City Hall the next day.

Goodman wouldn’t answer questions after the meeting.

He was seen storming out of the event saying “I’m not going to be called a racist.” When asked by a reporter what happened Goodman said “find out in there.”

Duncan said she didn’t think Goodman’s Obama outburst was racist or racially motivated. But she did say “it shows the mayor’s lack of sensitivity to our people and our neighborhoods.”
Some black residents say Goodman went overboard in criticizing Obama.

Be Super Safe This Super Bowl Sunday

Be Super Safe This Super Bowl Sunday
Year Not Beginning on High Note for Traffic Fatalities

WHAT: Free Rides and Safer Party Tips to Counter Stepped-Up Enforcement This Weekend
WHO: Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety, UNLV’s Safe Community Partnership, Designated Drivers and Local Law Enforcement
WHY: Super Bowl Sunday Second only to New Years Eve for Alcohol Related Crashes

Clark County and all of Nevada have made record progress on reducing traffic fatalities since 2006 when fatalities peaked at 432; that year 139 of the fatalities were alcohol related. In 2008, the most recent year for accurate alcohol data, there were 321 traffic fatalities, 126 of them alcohol related.

So even though fatalities dropped by 121 lives in that time frame, alcohol related fatalities only dropped from 139 to 126, in fact, an increase of the percentage of alcohol crashes.

Fast forward to February, 2010: fatalities in Clark County for January were just released and they are not good news, our traffic fatalities doubled what they were in 2009. Super bowl Sunday is the second most likely holiday for alcohol crashes and agencies are stepping up to make sure we give drivers every opportunity to get home safely this weekend.

Local law enforcement will be joining forces all through the week looking for drinking drivers and those generally driving without thought of the consequences. Media messages urging listeners to “Make the Right Call” are all over television and radio, and as an added incentive, free rides will be available all day Sunday until midnight through Designated Drivers, supported by a grant from the NV Office of Traffic Safety, State Farm Insurance and the Rampart Casino Group.

Mayweather vs. Mosley May 1, MGM Grand

LAS VEGAS (February 3, 2010) - It's official. Boxing's biggest superstar and six-time world champion Floyd "Money" Mayweather made his upcoming fight with welterweight mega-star and five-time world champion Sugar Shane Mosley, official today when he signed the contract that pits the two fighters against each other on Saturday, May 1 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in a mega-bout which will be televised live on HBO Pay-Per-View®.

"This one is definitely for the fans as I wasn't going to waste anyone's time with a meaningless tune-up bout and asked to fight Shane immediately," said Mayweather. "I have said ever since I came back to the sport that I only wanted to fight the best. I think Shane is one of the best, but come May 1, he still won't be great enough to beat me."

"I have always wanted to fight Floyd and now it is finally coming true," said Mosley, who signed his side of the deal last Friday in Las Vegas. "I am already in great shape and ready to show everyone on May 1 that I am stronger, faster and better than he is. I will have no problem beating him."
In addition to the fight being one of the most competitive and talked about contests in each of the fighters' careers, Mayweather and Mosley have agreed to Olympic-style drug testing for the fight.

"Floyd has been trying to make this fight for the last 10 years, so he is extremely excited about the opportunity to face Shane," said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO, Mayweather Promotions. "He can't wait to extend his undefeated record and perform at the highest level. More importantly, he is also happy to set the precedent for random blood testing in order to ensure fair and safe contests for all fighters."

"When two champions of this caliber meet in the ring, you can expect nothing but excellence and that is what we are going to see on May 1," said Richard Schaefer, CEO, Golden Boy Promotions. "Shane Mosley is one of the greatest fighters of this era and I commend him for not only agreeing to the fight against Mayweather, but also agreeing to participate in a testing process that can only help the integrity of the sport."

"Mayweather-Mosley is a showdown of superstars that fans have been talking about for years", said Mark Taffet of HBO Pay-Per-View. "It has all the elements of a pay-per-view mega-fight."

A 1996 Olympic Bronze medalist for the United States, Floyd Mayweather (40-0, 25 KO's) has since gone on to strike Gold in the professional ranks, winning six world titles in five weight classes to firmly establish himself as one of the most elite fighters of his era. With dominating wins over the likes of world champions Diego Corrales, Jose Luis Castillo, Arturo Gatti, Zab Judah, Oscar de la Hoya and Ricky Hatton, Mayweather was on a meteoric rise to hall of fame greatness when he announced his retirement from the ring in 2008. But he left the door open for a return if the right challenge presented itself and after 18 months of a much needed physical and emotional break from the ring, he returned to boxing on September 19, 2009 with a dominating and spectacular victory over future Hall of Famer Juan Manuel Marquez.

A future Hall of Famer with five world titles to his name, Shane Mosley (46-5, 39 KO's) has ruled the lightweight, welterweight and junior middleweight divisions over his storied 16-year career and at 38 years old, the Pomona, Calif. native seems to be getting better and better as the years pass. Winner of seven of his last eight fights dating back to 2005, Mosley has defeated the likes of Fernando Vargas (twice), Luis Collazo and Ricardo Mayorga, but his most recent victory also was one of his most spectacular -- a ninth round stoppage of Antonio Margarito in January 2009 to win the welterweight world title for the third time.

The 12-round welterweight battle is a highly competitive match-up that already has sports fans across the world buzzing to see two of the sport's biggest names meet in the squared circle in the premier boxing match-up of 2010.

More information on Mayweather vs. Mosley, including ticket prices, HBO Pay- Per- View information and press tour dates and cities, will be announced shortly.

Barack Obama Bashes Vegas Again

A year after President Barack Obama remarked during a town hall meeting that corporations using federal bailout money should stop visiting Las Vegas, he made a similar comment at another town hall today in reference to the down economy.

"This isn't how responsible families do their budgets. When times are tough, you tighten your belts," he said at a New Hampshire forum today. "You don't go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage. You don't blow a bunch of cash in Vegas when you're trying to save for college. You prioritize. You make tough choices. And it's time your government did the same."

Sen. Harry Reid released a statement this afternoon urging Obama to "lay off Las Vegas."
“I just spoke to the White House and told them that while the president is correct that people saving for college need to be fiscally responsible, the president needs to lay off Las Vegas and stop making it the poster child for where people shouldn’t be spending their money," Reid said. “To truly reenergize our economy, we need people to travel to Las Vegas. I would much rather tourists and business travelers spend their money in Las Vegas than spend it overseas.”

Gov. Jim Gibbons fired back at Obama's comment this afternoon.

"How dare he insult any American city," Gibbons said before meeting with Nevada school superintendents in Carson City today. "I'm writing a letter to him today telling him to tone down or temper his remarks about Las Vegas. This is another slap in the face of the hard-working families in Nevada."

Sen. John Ensign said Obama's remarks were another hit that Las Vegas can't afford. Ensign said he plans to call Obama seeking an apology.

“President Obama has become quite comfortable criticizing Las Vegas,” Ensign said in a statement. “Unfortunately, I think that he has failed to grasp the weight that his words carry. As a result of his irresponsible comment just last year, countless companies and federal agencies canceled their conventions at Las Vegas hotels, costing these hotels and our city millions of dollars. Once again he has threatened the struggling economy of Las Vegas. I certainly hope that companies across this country understand that his comments are simply cavalier assumptions about a city that offers dollar for dollar the best rates in the country."

Hopkins vs. Jones Rematch April 3 Mandalay Bay

NEW YORK (February 1) . . . After 17 years the wait is over as sure-fire future Hall of Famers Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins and Roy "The Terminator" Jones Jr. collide in a long awaited rematch that will add the final chapter to their 17-year rivalry. The Rivals: Hopkins vs. Jones II is set for Saturday, April 3 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nev. The bout will be broadcast live on pay-per-view beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

The fighters will participate in a press tour with stops in New York and Los Angeles next Tuesday and Wednesday, February 9 and 10, respectively.

Hopkins (50-5-1, 32 KOs) and Jones (54-6, 40 KOs), two of boxing's most decorated and recognizable fighters who have given fans more than two decades worth of brilliant ring memories, will put it all on the line and leave no doubts as to who gets the bragging rights.

"A rematch with Roy has been in the back of my mind for a long time and it's finally going to happen," said Hopkins. "I have accomplished a lot in my career since that night in Washington, DC in 1993, and I am going to end this thing between me and Roy once and for all."

"We're giving the fans what they want to see. They deserve this fight and why not supply the fans with what they demand?" said Jones. "Now I can finally terminate the Executioner once and for all. My new nickname for this fight will be - The Terminator."
